Who is a virtual photo shoot for? 

Virtual photo shoots are for anyone really, but they do tend to appeal to the kind of person, probably a solopreneur, who isn’t afraid of trying something new.

If you’re curious, you’re creative, you’re an outside the box thinker and you’re willing to challenge the traditional approaches to doing things, then a virtual photo shoot is probably for you.

You’re probably excited about the changes and digital advancements that have happened since the 2020 shake-up and if so, I’m excited to have you here, ‘cos I’m totally onboard with ongoing learning, revamps and reinventions.

Either that or you’re a solopreneur who’s been hiding out at home since the start of the epic mishap that was 2020, you’ve been pivoting your business like hell to get it online-ready and now you’ve realised that your once fresh professional profile photo is no longer a true reflection of your Zoom video face, and it needs an update – but you’re not quite ready to step outside your door to join a complete stranger in a small room while they shove a huge lens in your face.

I know, having been a professional photographer since 2007 that if you’re already camera shy or if you’re slightly on the introverted side – then virtual photo shoots are going to appeal to you. 

But I also know, that if the results aren’t great, or if your expectations aren’t managed correctly, then you could land up damaging your self-confidence even more. 

Pros and Cons of Virtual Photo Shoots

PROS:

  1. Convenience: You get to stay at home so it’s convenient and you have all your wardrobe with you
  2. Quicker: No travel & shorter shoot
  3. Cheaper: It’s cheaper than a studio shoot so you can have more shoots, more often
  4. International teams: Great for international teams who need consistency in team photos
  5. Introverts: Private and familiar surroundings
  6. Socially distanced: Safe environment and personal space
  7. Online is more acceptable: People are more open to online services
  8. Images save to models’ phone: You keep all the photos from the shoot
  9. Having professional guidance – Guided with setup, lighting and poses
  10. Up to date: Easy to update headshots and profile pictures regularly
 

CONS:

  1. You have to stay at home: Home might be messy, lighting not great and having family & pets around
  2. Limited to specs of subjects phone: Photos are only as good as your phone camera
  3. Lens distortion: Phone cameras distort images more than professional gear
  4. File Type: Phone cameras only shoot in lower resolution Jpegs rather than professional Raw files
  5. Internet connection issues + Tech glitches: Could cause problems during the shoot
  6. Not the personal touch: Extroverts may feel they lack the personal touch with the shoot experience
  7. Moving the Camera: Have to move the camera yourself or have someone with you
  8. Images save to models phone: You’ll see ALL the photos – even the bad ones.
  9. Less easy to do full personal brand photo shoot: Generally more suited to basic head shots
  10. Different approaches to virtual photoshoots: Different photographers have different technical setups for virtual photo shoots with varying quality results, namely:
      1. Webcam + screenshots
      2. Webcam + professional camera
      3. Direct Phone to phone connection
