Why a social media detox is good for your business

I recently went on an impromptu social media detox and the impact has been incredible!

Having just celebrated my 42nd birthday with a midweek countryside getaway, I’ve really noticed the difference that not being on social media has had on my wellbeing, my clarity and my creativity.

The importance of taking a social media break

Apart from this 2 night mid-week getaway I’ve taken a much bigger break from social media lately – probably about 3 weeks in total, where I wasn’t posting, wasn’t checking, wasn’t engaging.

Although many social media gurus would swear this is the worst thing an entrepreneur can do for their brands, I feel it’s the best thing I could do for myself, which does directly impact my business, because my business is part of me.

Whatsapp Message…

Thanks to scheduling tools I use, I did keep actively posting.

One women even remarked this week about how strong my social media game is right now…

On the whole I only physically shared a handful of posts in the entire 3 weeks and yes, I do have brand alignment which is partly how I’m able to take this hiatus and still have women messaging me to get help with their content creation.

Here’s why taking a breather from social media is good for your business…

Why taking a breather from social media is good for your business…

  • In order to create something of value, you need to create a space in which to create it. Social media is a space for sharing and connecting, not for creating.
  • In order to access your creative spark, you need to quiet the noise and find the inspiration in the silence. Social media is noisy & distracting.
  • In order to express what’s uniquely yours, you need distance from outside influences. Social media makes comparison and copycatting too easy.
  • In order to remember what’s most important to YOU, you need to check in with yourself, rather than being sidetracked by other people’s priorities.

My Creativity, clarity & productivity exploded without social media

I filmed 3 days of video and edited it all into one video in 1 day.

I can’t tell you how many adventures I’ve filmed that have never reached the editing software and seen the light of day. The excuse has always been – I’m too BUSY (excuse the foul language!)

Something that shifted significantly as a result of stepping away from seeing what everyone else is doing is that I stepped towards the experiences that really excited and enthused ME. The things that are really important to me.

And because I was filming and experiencing only the things that are important to me, I WANTED to edit the video to honour the memories of those experiences. They were afterall, gifts – not just birthday gifts but universal gifts. Gifts that we GOT to experience. And so I created my little video as a demonstration of my gratitude – not for the likes, or comments or subscribers.

And you know what – the intention behind the creation CHANGED EVERYTHING!

I was no longer seeking public acknowledgement or approval. I was simply immortalizing a beautiful experience – and I enjoyed the creative experience all the way from filming to editing to publishing.

THAT’S THE KIND OF CREATION WE SHOULD ALL BE AIMING FOR!

the intention behind the creation CHANGED EVERYTHING!
