Exploring Clarens| South African Road Trip Part 3

The privilege of reflecting back on these trips while I edit the videos is making me truly appreciate the memories I made with the people I love most, but also appreciate the sheer beauty of the South African landscape.

Having visited Clarens in the Free State many years ago, when my husband and I were still dating, I realise now how much of it we actually missed and how much there is to savour in this spectacular part of the country. Even now, having edited this video and done more research for the narration, I can’t wait to go back and explore more of what Clarens has to offer.

Not only is it a photographer, videographer and artist’s delight, but it’s a place for families to explore together and create those special stories I now feel so blessed to have on record.

Clarens – The Jewel of the Free State

Watch now: Exploring Clarens. In this video you’ll see…

  • The crazy amount of rain that keeps this part of South Africa so luscious and green
  • The quaint village square with it’s many shops and eateries
  • The beautiful, eclectic neighbourhood (that we could see ourselves living in)
  • The spectacular walking trails and views over this gorgeous country town
  • … ending off with a mesmerising drive through the meandering roads of the Golden Gate National Park

Clarens Inspires the Creative in us

It’s no wonder that Clarens is known as an ‘arty-farty’ village. The place itself is an artist’s muse.

I found myself inspired to capture the changing light, the epic vistas and the adorable dirt-road clad suburbs. I’m only annoyed with myself now that I wasn’t shooting on my ‘big camera’ opting rather to remain true to my commitment of filming our entire trip on my iPhone. (There’s a video coming about that soon!)

So I guess that means we’ll just have to go back there again so I can create a video using my professional gear! I really would not complain if that opportunity came up – any excuse to flex my creative muscle.

Clarens is worth a Re-Visit

There’s so much more I still want to see in Clarens – apparently there are some impressive dinosaur fossils, white water rafting, horse riding and of course more hiking trails that we didn’t get to explore this time round.

There’s just so much to do and so little time. We’ll just have to move there!   (J.K.) (Not really)

Regardless of all the touristy attractions, the nature itself is enough to warrant a revisit to Clarens.
